Doing our bit for Haiti

By ufsb - Posted on 01 March 2010

The tragedy of Haiti made headlines all over the world. So it’s good to see that Malaysians have taken notice and did their part to help the survivors.

Limkokwing University of Creative Technology donated RM30,000 to the survivors of the recent devastating earthquake in Haiti which killed 100,000 and left more than 3,000,000 homeless.
The University also organised a charitable concert with UNICEF named ‘Heal the World’ which raised additional funds for the victims.

Students from 150 countries joined in along with university staff and lecturers to organise the fundraising concert. Donation boxes were placed around the campus prior to the event to collect contributions.

Among the VIPs at the concert was Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, A. Kohilan Pillay who presented the combined donations and collections to Miss Choon Bow Bow, Chief, Private Sector Fundraising and Partnerships, UNICEF Malaysia.

The money will be used to provide food and medical assistance, as well as help rebuilding homes and hospitals.

UNICEF is incredibly humbled and touched by the rush of unconditional generosity displayed by Malaysian’s after the earthquake struck”, said Choon Bow Bow.
Limkokwing’s rising stars Arnez from Zimbabwe, King Lhota from Senegal and Ronnie from Malaysia were among those who performed for the appreciative audience.

During his speech Kohilan Pillay applauded Limkokwing University’s initiative in helping the unprivileged victims of Haiti and he also spoke of how he was highly impressed to see young people involved in humanitarian activities.
Ms Tiffanee Marie Lim, Special Assistant to the President of Limkokwing University and organiser of the event said that such an initiative is imperative to help those who are homeless.
Limkokwing University is the leading Asian University in Innovation and strives to promote world peace and harmony as part of the university’s culture. The University has over 30,000 students from 150 countries.
